Volvo has created a refined Scandinavian luxury car in the form of the S80. This Scandinavian beauty is included in the latest generation of Volvo’s vehicles that are naturally aspirated and possess evolutionary styling.

The S80 is the largest of Volvo’s S-range of saloons and said to be providing competitive alternatives that dominating models are offering. S80 combines the distinct Scandinavian style, excellent ride and handling that characterized a dynamic Volvo. The engines available for S80 includes the all-new 315hp V8 with AWD and 3.2L naturally aspirated inline-six-cylinder with 238 horsepower, available with AWD.

According to Frederik Arp, Volvo Cars CEO, “We are convinced that the all new Volvo S80 will be a very strong contender in its class and win over many new customers considering the other popular premium brand rivals. We expect to sell 50,000 new S80s a year around the world, of which 70 per cent will be new Volvo customers.”

The debut of the first generation S80, Volvo has specifically heralded its bold design that reflects the automaker’s new design direction. But the Swedish automaker did not stop there. Its team of designers cleverly incorporated an auto styling innovation that reflects youthful and dynamic design language plus of course with the addition of Volvo safety technology.

Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars Design Deirector said, “The all new S80 is about evolutionary design. All the shapes and materials it uses represent a continuous development of the Volvo design language. We have given the all new S80 a more youthful and dynamic stance, and created an even more inviting atmosphere by using refined materials and colours that blend smoothly with smart, user-friendly technology.”

In terms of safety technology, the S80 features a unique Personal Car Communicator or PCC and new active safety systems like Collision Warning and Brake Support with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), active Bi-Xenon headlights and a patented body structure developed at the award winning Volvo Safety Centre.

The PPC is a remarkable feature in the sense that it includes an optional key fob that makes “keyless drive” possible and delivers intelligent technology to remotely check if the vehicle is locked or not. This same feature also alerts the driver if the alarm has been activated. A heartbeat sensor also gives off an alarm if there is someone left inside the car. The Collision Warning System alerts the driver via a heads-up warning display on the windscreen plus audible buzzer, in case the gap to the car in front closes so fast that collision is imminent, the Brake Support System boosts the braking force to ensure that the car will stop just on time to prevent collisions.

The S80 is equipped with only the best auto parts that Volvo can offer as a fact even its Volvo CV joint is made extra special just to meet the high standard set by the automaker for the S80. The safety features of the new S80 surpassed previous lineup like for example the 1985 Volvo 780.

Volvo Buses Go New Zealand

Tom Bailey asked:

Looks like a good source of more finances and funding. And it really does look much like good money. Nothing bad there.

What am I talking about? Well, news have it that Volvo Buses has just received an order for some twenty new Volvo V7RLE city buses. Volvo Buses is the sister of Volvo Cars, a company that manufactures cars and other auto products like Volvo car parts and the whole lot.

Anyhow, the order for these twenty buses was actually straight from Auckland, New Zealand. Their customer is the Infratil Public Transport which makes use of city buses that make use of the Volvo engine technology which has been made just right so much so that it has met the emission standards in New Zealand. You see, the great deal here is that Volvo’s engine technology can be said to be advanced for the emission standards would yet have to be effective in the year 2012. It may be some years away already but Volvo’s client has made sure that as early as now, they would be coming in ready for the new emission standards.

Rune Lundberg is the head of Volvo Buses’ Region International and on this new update they received, he says, “With this order, we have achieved a breakthrough in the country also with regard to city buses. I foresee favorable prospects for more orders.” Sure enough, if such would be the new emission standards and Volvo has the right kind of city buses for it, then more and more orders may come pouring in for the manufacturer.

So what has these Volvo buses got? According to the company, they have used SRC technology and this is what is responsible for the sharp reduction of emission levels on their buses. This technology can be also considered as the technology that would bring in more sales for the company. You see, with SCR technology, Volvo can create buses that would be able to meet the Euro 5 standard on emissions regulations. “The new Volvo buses have emissions levels that are 70-90% lower than today’s city bus fleet in Auckland,” explains Warren Cavel, the general manager of Volvo Buses.

Glady Reign asked:

The Swedish brand Volvo recently received awards from Carlisle & Company for their excellence in the distribution of their service parts. Volvo Cars North America was given the distinction as having the number one automotive parts distribution network in the United States by the private consulting firm.

Carlisle & Company polled 14,000 parts manager which represents 19 car manufacturers with operations in the United States to come up with the winner for the distinction.

“Being selected as top performer has been one of our long term objectives, actually since 1992,” says Robert Deutsch, the North American Parts Manager for Volvo Cars. “We started with a rather good system and have systematically improved it over the years. Today our total service parts network is focused on delivering the right part, at the right time, every time… we strive for perfection,” he added further.

The award given to the company is the Service Parts Supply Chain Fulfillment. The award recognizes the Swedish firm’s dedication to provide their consumers utmost satisfaction in every part of Volvo car ownership. The distinction means that Volvo is successful is providing spare parts like Volvo tune up parts to their consumers. They achieved this feat by making sure that their parts distribution network is effective in its task.

“Today, the new car sales experience is just the first touch for customers visiting Volvo retailers. Ownership expectations, and of course meeting those demands, are key to having repeat new car sales,” says Deutsch. “Our whole parts organization should take credit for this achievement. Without a collective effort and holding to our long standing objective of end service to the customer, this award would not have been possible.”

Aside from the Service Parts Supply Chain Fulfillment award, Carlisle & Company also acknowledged Volvo Cars of North America as one of the three Best Practice Leaders for Global Supply Chain Fulfillment. The three winners of the award came from the automotive, agriculture, and construction equipment fields. “Volvo was the only automotive manufacturer to be recognized for superior total Parts distribution processes,” says Deutsch of the citation.

“Our global approach is based on Volvo Cars, Sweden’s unique approach of handling functions that best done centrally and of allowing in-country markets to be a local extension of the total logistics system. We have an extremely good supply structure that is both global and local at the same time,” he continues.

The Swedish company is known for producing safe cars and this year has marked its 80th anniversary. For the 2008 model year, the company’s offering for the United States auto market are the Volvo S40, S60, S80, V50, V70, XC90, C30 and the C70. These cars are known for their safety - in fact, the C70 convertible recently received the Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This shows that Volvo does not only excel in the distribution of their auto parts but also in providing their customers with safe vehicles.

The award was announced after rumors started in the auto industry surrounding the fate of Volvo Cars. It is speculated that the Swedish car manufacturer will be sold by the struggling Ford Motor Company. Volvo is currently part of Ford’s Premiere Automotive Group (PAG) along with British luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover.

Glady Reign asked:

Volvo Car’s new XC70 all-wheel drive estate offers significantly improved levels of an all-road-all-season ability and an appealing drive feel that is mated to outstanding safety features, superb versatility and sophisticated comfort to lure more fanatics to experience its lasting enigma.

Enthusiasts say they have finally found the vehicle that could withstand different seasons. Now, everyone can enjoy the free-spitted driving any time of the year. This is the solid fact that the Volvo XC70 has retained its magnetic appeal. The current generation of the vehicle has reached around 40,000 sales in its best year. “We had a winning concept from the very outset and we have continuously refined it,” said Fredrik Arp, the president and CEO of Volvo Car Corp. “The all-new XC70 maintains its tough, capable attitude while at the same time growing more comfortable. Additionally, our design team has given the vehicle a more elegant, more luxurious look.”

Arp added, “This segment has been our specialty ever since we invented it back in the 1950s. Our competitors can count on us remaining number one in the future, too. In the all-new V70, rear passengers and luggage both ride in first class.” Volvo is now aiming to introduce the Volvo XC70 in China to reach third place in the model’s sales statistics. Arp noted, “There is a considerable appetite for cars with pronounced attitude on the fast-growing Chinese market. The Volvo XC90 is already very popular and we are convinced the all-new XC70 will play a significant role in our plans for continued fast sales growth in China.”

“Our successful XC range will soon be expanded with the new XC60. With three exciting XC models, we will cover even more of the growing number of car buyers who want the very best of two worlds - capable muscles and luxurious, comfortable passenger-car comfort,” added Arp. “And it all began with the XC70, which has now become even more attractive than before.”

Volvo made the XC70 sportier, bolder and more functional because it was engineered to accommodate weather changes and season transitions. The pool of Volvo engineers significantly upgraded the levels of road capability and refinement to pave way for a more appealing vehicle that ensures unmatched levels of athleticism, versatility and safety which are characteristically Volvos.

The all-new Volvo XC70 is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine and a 2.4-litre five-cylinder D5 turbo diesel engine. “With an active chassis, the car’s driving properties improve in all situations,” said Volvo Cars XC70 Project Director, Tomas Ahlborg. “It becomes both safer and more entertaining to drive.” To boost the performance of the engines and the chassis, the estate is equipped with a Volvo fan clutch. Other remarkable features include the dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC), which improves stability; the power parking brake (PPB) that automatically disengages when the accelerator is pressed; and the digital signal processing (DSP) audio system.

The all-new Volvo XC70 is also equipped with dynamic styling emphasized by a catchy sporty design, a raked windscreen, tailgate angles, C30-inspired taillights and blacked-out side pillars mated to the usual off-road body kit. “The dark-coloured plastic panels at the bottom are less obvious than on the current model. But as with exclusive outdoor clothing, the protection is placed exactly where it needs to be to withstand the rough stuff,” said Volvo Cars Design Director, Steve Mattin.

Volvo Cars, Finalist for "the Axa Award for Corporate Responsibility”

January 19th, 2010 | Posted in volvo   Comments Off
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

“We are very proud to be the only car manufacturer on the list of finalists,” says Steven Armstrong who is the Chief Operating Officer at the Volvo Car Corporation. “To us it is very important that we find a balance between innovation and efficiency to ensure the future sustainability of our company within the car industry. For this reason it is particularly exciting to be part of this short list and to gain recognition for our long-term work within the area of Corporate Social Responsibility. I would also like to use this opportunity to congratulate the winner HP Corporation EMEA and hope to be able to exchange knowledge with them and with other companies in Europe within this field”.

Volvo Cars’ heritage shows profound commitment to corporate social responsibility. It is evidenced by the corporation’s three core values - safety, quality and environment concerns. The corporation is also publishing an annual Sustainability Report highlighting the company’s responsibility as a car manufacturer, as a global company and as a local player.

“Explore the beauty of safety.” That’s what the Volvo website says. And the phraseology is not found wanting. The track record of Volvo includes 75 ground-braking safety innovations since the year 1927. Innovations include the safety cage and the laminated windscreen which were both introduced to the automotive industry through its being used in the Volvo PV 444 in the 1940s.

In addition, the most-recent safety innovations include the ISOFIX anchorages with the rearward-facing child safety seat, dual stage airbag, Volvo Safety Concept Car (SCC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS), safe 3rd row seats for the Volvo XC90, new front structures for the Volvo XC90, S40 and V50, Intelligent Driver Information System, Blind Spot Information System, and the water repellent glass. The Volvo brake hose, engines, and other car features are also improved to advance safety.

When style and quality are to be considered, the car manufacturer is entertaining a new design direction to boost quality and appeal. “If you can recognize a Volvo from 50 meters today, I want to get to the point where people will be able to spot one from twice the distance in the future,” added Mattin. “We need to be recognizable as Volvo. We’re still about Scandinavian simplicity; we can’t be playful or do styling for the sake of styling. Volvos last a long time, so our design must have legs. But we can’t be too simple or we’d edge toward blandness. And we can’t just change; we must be fresh. I want to broaden our design and have more variation between car lines.”

Volvo is also famed for its dedication in producing environment-friendly vehicles. Recently, it has expanded its range to include FlexiFuel cars. These cars are powered by renewable bioethanol fuel. “Interest in ethanol as a vehicle fuel is growing in Europe,” said Gerry Keaney, Senior Vice President Market, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Cars.

“We are therefore expanding our range with additional models on a total of 9 markets. First to get Volvo’s FlexiFuel cars outside Sweden will be Britain, Ireland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Norway,” says Keaney and he does continue, “It’s very encouraging that the market is expanding and that political initiatives are being taken.”

“Our commitment to safe mobility needs to be enlarged from the protection of occupants and other road users in collisions to include personal health for all road users and to offer them sustainable mobility solutions”, said Hans-Olov Olsson.

HP Corporation EMEA emerged as the winner of the AXA Award for Corporate Responsibility. Aside from HP Corporation EMEA and Volvo Car Corporation, other finalists of the award include ABN AMRO, Akzo Nobel NV, Conergy AG, Diageo Ireland, Henkel KGaA, Kingfisher Plc, Shepherd Neame and SODEXHO ALLIANCE.

Volvo’s Clean Inside Clean Outside Philosophy

January 18th, 2010 | Posted in volvo   Comments Off
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

It is common knowledge for car enthusiasts that the Swedish brand Volvo is known for the safety of their vehicles. Since the founding of the company 80 years ago, they have made safety their top priority when creating their products. But aside from developing safety features such as the BLIS, ROPS and WHIPS, the company is also devoting their effort to help protect the environment and at the same time provide comfortable and convenient consumer features. This concern for the environment is part of Volvo Cars’ Clean Inside Clean Outside philosophy.

Clean Inside means that the development of fabrics, leathers, and other materials used for the interior of Volvo vehicles should be consumer and environment friendly. The company uses consumer friendly fabrics for the seats, carpets, and even safety belts of their vehicles. The OEKO-Tex 100 Textile standard, according to the company’s website, is a benchmark used in the European industry. The said standard calls for the use of fabrics, threads, carpets and safety belts which do not have any amount of hazardous substance on it. This is made sure by checking that the process used in the production of the said materials has limited or no use of harmful substance. This step is made to ensure that the occupants of their vehicles will not risk their health by being exposed to the harmful element which could have been present in the said material if the standard was not upheld.

Another part of Volvo Cars’ Clean Inside standard is the “Nose Team”. According to the Ford Motor Company owned brand, a “Nose Team” tests the smell of the materials used on the interior of every Volvo auto model. This step is to find out whether the materials will be pleasant or not. The team tests these materials under several conditions. Volvo said that they even test the materials’ smell after being heated under the sun. This shows how far the company would go to ensure that they will deliver the best vehicles for their consumers.

Under their Clean Outside program, the company is concerned about making their engines produce as little harmful gas emission as possible. With the use of different exhaust filters which treats the exhaust gases, Volvo Cars have reduced the emission of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbon emissions by as much as 99 percent.

Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas which is regarded as the most common type of deadly poisoning in many countries. The gas affects the central nervous system and the heart, two of the most vital organs of the human body. The gas can also affect a fetus inside a pregnant woman. Nitrogen oxides are also toxic and contribute heavily to global warming since it is a greenhouse gas. The reduction of these emissions means that Volvo cars can meet the strict emission standard mandated by different countries. In the European Union, a harsher emission standard has already been approved and in the United States, the state of California is known for the strict emission laws.

One concrete evidence of the Clean Outside program for Volvo is the fact that the new Volvo XC90 has already met California’s requirements for the ULEV or Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle classification.

Environment friendly vehicles can only be considered green cars if the manner they were produced did not produce substances or emissions which can damage the environment. Volvo is aware of this fact and it has the distinction of having the world’s cleanest factory. The said facility is also part of Volvo’s Clean Outside program. The company’s paint shop in Torslanda, Sweden is given the distinction of being the cleanest factory since 1991. The said factory produces a limited amount of potentially hazardous materials and the company is still working to cut it down. This complements the flex-fuel vehicles that Volvo is producing which are made with high quality Volvo performance parts.

With Ford having clean factories, it is not a surprise that one of its subsidiaries is also working to make their vehicles and production facilities even cleaner.
