Nothing is Compromised With the Volvo

Kevin Anderson asked:

Since the year 1997, the Volvo C70 has been manufactured. This has been made available as a product of the collaboration of Volvo Cars and of the Ford Motor Company. This vehicle took the place that used to belong to the Volvo 780. The vehicle has been designed so much so that it would be marketed and sold as a convertible and as a coupe and the Volvo C70 is also an entrant to the cabriolet and the luxury coupe segment.

You would be able to meet only quite a few Volvo C70s on the roads, streets, and highways. However, once you are able to know the vehicle, you would surely be hooked on it for a real long time.

The Volvo C70 has been built with retractable hardtops. Straight right out of the factories in Sweden that also build Volvo S60 parts and other Volvo cars and vehicles, the Volvo C70 came to the United States auto market only this April. And come the month of September, there have only been some 2,545 units of the vehicle sold. But this has not been a matter of concern for Volvo. You see, there are only quite a small number of Volvo vehicles that are sold in the United States per year. In fact, according to Volvo, they are only projecting to sell only 8000 units of the Volvo C70 per year.

If you do own the Volvo C70, you would surely find that this vehicle is one that does not compromise any of the features that you would want to find in a vehicle. And imagine, you would be able to enjoy driving through various weather with the top up or even down. Experts in the field also do say that this special vehicle would surely be able to transform those who do not like convertibles into convertible lovers and owners. That is the kind of power that Volvo has bestowed on the Volvo C70.

Take a look at the interior of this vehicle and you would find the door panels to have large and very much stylized badges. These badges actually do inform you that behind everything you see in the vehicle, there is the inflatable curtain system that would give you that safety that you would need. There also are the rear headrests that would give you the right kind of protection during collisions or crashes and even rollovers. Sure enough, Volvo did not forget that whatever kind of vehicle it produces, safety would not be compromised as well as all other things essential in a vehicle.

Xc60 Signals a More “pumped-up” Volvo

Thursday, March 27th, 2008
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

Ford’s Swedish luxury brand earlier unleashed a new sport utility vehicle that signaled the beginning of a more pumped-up aura of Volvo cars.

Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars design director said the car embodies “the DNA of future Volvos”. He added, “We’re about to elevate Volvo’s DNA to new levels by pumping up the volume. It takes the emotion of the C30 a step further.” The Volvo XC60, revealed by Volvo at the recently-held North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is said to evoke brand new styling and design of the forthcoming lineup of the automaker.

The SUV features a glass roof, a mechanical tailgate, 20-inch rims, a new shifting mechanism and a newly styled grille. The larger Volvo logo contributed to the bolder look of the vehicle. It is also given a distinct rear end to emphasize the tailgate as well as the Volvo logo.

“If you can recognize a Volvo from 50 meters today, I want to get to the point where people will be able to spot one from twice the distance in the future,” Mattin added. “We need to be recognizable as Volvo. We’re still about Scandinavian simplicity; we can’t be playful or do styling for the sake of styling. Volvos last a long time, so our design must have legs. But we can’t be too simple or we’d edge toward blandness. And we can’t just change; we must be fresh. I want to broaden our design and have more variation between car lines.”

Volvo Car president Fredrik Arp added that the Volvo XC60 would likely be “the C30 owner’s next car”. The production version of the SUV would be very identical to the concept. Mattin said it was designed to be like “a giant iPod”.

The vehicle is carefully engineered so as not to compromise the traditional Volvo safety aspects. Volvo enthusiasts could still expect Volvo auto care that features a low-speed adaptive braking system called City Safety. The safety feature prevents the Volvo XC60 from running into the car in front at low speeds. The SUV is also given Volvo’s 3.-litre 6-cylinder flex-fuel engine, which allows ethanol to be used instead of petrol. The new engine cuts emissions by up to 80 per cent.

“Our V8 package feels immensely solid. When it comes to power and performance, we’re in the same class as the very best in the segment. What’s more, we’re sure that a large proportion of these customers will appreciate the fact that the power and driveability can be combined with high safety and good environmental properties. It’s important that we can launch a V8 without compromising on our core values,” said Hans-Olov Olsson, Volvo Cars’ President and CEO.

The Volvo XC60 is the automaker’s entry to the fastest-growing sector of the automotive market. Volvo expects that the new SUV will boost global sales by 75 per cent to 443,000 cars in the next couple of years. The automaker expects that the Volvo XC60 will also attract more buyers especially the young and active urbanites. Arp added that the Volvo XC60 will be as important as the Volvo C30 in expanding the brand’s sales. He also added that the concept is a good indicator of what the production model will look like.

Volvo is delivering the Volvo XC60 with high hopes same as its 240 model. The latter uses exceptional Volvo 240 parts to enhance its capabilities and functionality. The Volvo 240 was the best-selling car of the automaker. From 1975 to 1982, the Volvo 240 is the only vehicle from Volvo that is imported to the United States. That’s the measure of the Volvo 240’s global popularity.

volvo
Glady Reign asked:

The Swedish car manufacturer’s arm in North America recently reported their sales figures for the month of May. Volvo Cars of North America, LLC reported that they have sold 9,208 cars and light trucks in the United States and Puerto Rico combined. The said sales output marks a decrease of 9.2 percent as compared to the number of vehicles they sold for the same month last year.

Including Canada and Mexico, the total sales for Volvo Cars of North America is reported to be 10,636 units. That sales output represents an 8.4 percent reduction compared to May of last year’s sales output. In Canada, Volvo sales are down by 5 percent while in Mexico, sales increased by 10.5 percent. In Canada, Volvo sold 1,166 cars and light trucks while in Mexico, sales amounted to 263 units.

The midsize luxury crossover SUV is still the best selling auto model for Volvo in the United States, including Puerto Rico, and Canada. In Mexico, the best selling car model for Volvo is the S40.

Volvo sold 2,626 units of the XC90 in the United States including Puerto Rico. The increasing popularity of the crossover SUV is reflected in the 8.8 percent sales increase. While the month of May saw an increase in the sale of the XC90, year to date sale is down by 4.8 percent. Last year’s first five months saw Volvo sell 13,563 Volvo XC90s which are known for their safety and smooth ride thanks to Volvo shocks. After five months this year, Volvo has only managed to sell 12,914 units of the XC90.

In Canada, the XC90 suffered a sales decrease of 24.2 percent. Volvo sold 229 units of the XC90 in Canada last month and that number is lower than the 302 units they have sold in the country last year for the same month. Year to date sale is also reduced by 24.4 percent. From last year’s 1,294 units of the XC90 sold for the first five months, Volvo has only managed to sell 978 units of the XC90 after five months this year.

In Mexico, the best-selling car model is the S40 although the demand for it has decreased. Last month, Volvo sold 91 units of the S40 and that number is down by 20.2 percent as compared to May of last year’s 114 units sold. The XC90 in Mexico meanwhile is steadily gaining ground with an increase in sale of 2.4 percent when Volvo sold two more XC90 last month than on May of 2006. Volvo sold 87 units of the XC90 last month and 85 units last year for the month of May.

In the United States, the highest gainer in Volvo’s lineup last month is the convertible C70. Volvo sold 572 units of the convertible last month, 1,872 percent more than the 29 C70s sold last year for the same month. In Canada, the highest gainer is the luxury sedan S80 with 177.8 percent more units sold this year’s May than last year’s. Volvo sold 75 units of the S80 in Canada last month while last year, they only sold 27 S80s for the month of May. In Mexico, the XC90 is the highest gainer. Volvo’s sale in Mexico is helped by the introduction of the S80 and the C30 at the said country.

How difficult is it to use the IPD kit to mount a Ford 5.0 Mustang V8 into a Volvo 240 series sedan?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008
volvo
Steve asked:

I have read of a few instances of people that have done this plus IPD makes all the parts that allow for this, plus I asked a Volvo guy at a Volvo-only garage how they’d do this and he said the only thing you need besides the new engine is to replace the front springs with 240 station wagon spring to accomodate the weight of the bigger heavier engine.

I want to make the penultimate sleeper car and I figure what better car to catch people with their pants down so to speak would be a Volvo 240 sedan, plus I like how they look and drive anyway.
Cool, but I was talking about the 240 Sedan, plus I have read about it in a few different car mags, plus I may have seen one at a car show I was attending. The 240 does seem to have a longish hood but in the event the Ford 5.0 V8 is too big, what about a Cleveland 302 or a Chevy 305 or small block 350, personally I am wary of Ford parts because my worst car snafus were always in the Fords I had. The GM style layout may not match up even with the IPD stuff for all I know.

John Garett asked:

Everybody has first impressions on names. But what’s in name? The Latin word Volvo means “I roll” but today, the name Volvo would create an impression on safety. This Swedish car brand has been a household name ever since it was first introduced in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company was founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson with passenger safety in mind: “Cars are driven by people. Therefore the guiding principle behind everything at Volvo is and must remain safety”. The Volvo symbol is an ancient chemistry sign for iron and Sweden is known for its quality iron. This symbolized the strength of iron that are used in Volvo cars. Many Volvo users and owners around the world describe Volvo cars as Swedish life vests or as personal Swedish armored cars. This is because of Volvo’s safety-enhancement efforts that were rewarded with several international awards, among them the “Prince Michael Road Safety Award” and the “Autocar & Motor” prize for the best safety features. Volvo offers almost all kinds of cars that suit different lifestyles. From sporty cars, to luxury vehicles, to family cars or even just your everyday touring cars, Volvo offers you these, always with a plus. Volvo North America Reports January Sales Drop

Thursday, March 20th, 2008
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

Volvo Cars of North America, LLC, reported 7,819 sales in the United States for the month of January. Compared to the figures reported last year for the same month, the numbers are down by 12 percent.

Overall Volvo sales for North America including Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, were 8,628. The number is 11 percent down compared to the start of 2006. Volvo Canada sales dropped by 4.5 percent with 571 units sold while Volvo Mexico sales increased by 15.5 percent with 238 units sold.

Volvo Cars of North America, which is based in Irvine, California, is a subsidiary of the Volvo Car Corporation of Goteborg, Sweden. The company provides marketing, sales, parts, service, technology and training support to Volvo automobile retailers in the United States, and oversees Volvo operations in the markets of Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Volvo is famed for manufacturing cars with safety in mind. “Cars are driven by people – the guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain – safety,” said Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson - both are founders of Volvo.

“Every year is a road safety year at Volvo.” That is the tagline of the automaker. And it expresses vast commitment to safety. As a fact, a quick sojourn to the past could tell how the automaker has been seriously taking its commitment to automotive safety. The track record includes 75 ground-braking safety innovations since 1927. From the innovative Volvo brake pads, airbags, seatbelts, to other car systems - the automaker is determined to contribute the best in auto safety features and technologies.

For the 2007 model year, Volvo introduced the award-winning new Volvo S40 and its wagon counterpart the Volvo V50; the award-winning Volvo XC90; the sporty Volvo S60 sedan - including the award-winning performance sedan; the Volvo S60 R and the performance wagon version - Volvo V70 R; the versatile Volvo V70 wagon and rugged Volvo XC70; the new Volvo C70 - the convertible with the innovative retractable hardtop, and the all-new Volvo S80.

Volvo is not losing its confidence in its lineup. The January sales drop could be recovered in the coming months. This is the very reason why the automaker is concentrating on marketing strategies to make the new lineup sell better.

The Ford Motor Co., where Volvo brand belongs, also reported a sales decline by 19 percent compared to last year’s figures. The decline was primarily attributed to the reduction in sales to daily rental companies by 65 percent.

“All of us at Ford are focused on restructuring our business to be profitable at lower volumes and offering more of the products people want, including more cars and more crossovers,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s President of The Americas. “We are focusing more of our attention on retail customers and reducing sales to daily rental companies sharply. Our customers benefit from this plan because their vehicles’ residual values will improve - a trend we already are seeing with our newest products.”

According to the Automotive Leasing Guide, “The resale values of Ford’s newest products have improved by as much as 11 percentage points with Ford closing the gap on many Asian competitors.” The residual values have also improved 2 percentage points compared with the prior model year for the 2007 Ford Fusion sedan. Sales have also been 6 points better for the 2007 Lincoln Navigator, 9 points better for the 2007 Ford Expedition and 11 points better for the 2008 Ford Escape. Ford’s new 2007 Edge crossover has resale values higher than Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano. Ford, along with all its brands, is striving hard to recover from the debilitating loss.

Volvo clubs also offer a unique opportunity to look back into the history and heritage of Volvo. These cars were first manufactured in 1927. There are several classics that are highly prized, but often shared with club members at cars shows and other Volvo events. These clubs offer members the chance to see these classic cars first hand, many of which look like they just came off the factory floor in Hisingen, Gothenburg, Sweden. The cars would have been used as family to cars to taxi cabs throughout their 90 years of history and heritage. They were also one of the safest cars on the road at that time.

There are currently over 4000 active club members in the United States and Canada. There are even more in 14 other countries around the world. If you are interested in joining a Volvo club in your area, simply visit the Volvo website. They have a listing of every Volvo club in the world.
