Volvo Babies are Now Grown Ups

Thursday, December 25th, 2008
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

Volvo Cars is currently heading towards a brand new styling philosophy to wipe away its boxy image. The evolution of design resulted to revelation of jaw-dropping revamped Volvo S40 sedan and the Volvo V50 wagon which have been both refined to give each model a more distinctive look.

“When the cars were introduced almost four years ago, we emphasized that they gave buyers the properties of the larger Volvo models but in a more compact format. Now we’re taking this approach one step further by increasing the ‘grown-up’ quality perception even more,” said Volvo Cars President and CEO Fredrik Arp.

Volvo also entertained a number of design cues to give the S40 closer semblance to the new S-range look as first shown on the Volvo S80. The V50 and the V70, on the other hand, are cues to look closer to new V-range. “When it comes to the exterior, we’re aiming for increased differentiation between the two models. The interior refinements have focused on liberating smart storage space,” said Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

The Swedish automakers product lines are far better that they were years ago. This is because automaker wanted to prove a remarkable design evolution that will set it apart from the assembly of the previous discount volvo parts. The all-new S40 comes with the new color-coordinated soft nose, a new grille with a larger Volvo mark, new headlamps, and a lower air intake.

“The new, lower and more horizontal appearance radiates smooth power. This impression is reinforced when the car is seen from the side. At the rear, it is the shape of the new tail lamps and the new bumper that further boost the dynamic appearance,” said Steve Harper, who has been responsible for the design of the new Volvo S40 and the Volvo V50.

The all-new V50 is equipped with a sportier black egg-crate grille with a larger Volvo mark, new headlamps, and the three sculpted lower air intakes. These new features give the new color-coordinated soft-nose V50 front an increased aura of solidity. “Here, we’ve created visual vertical elements in order to further emphasize the new grille,” said Harper.

“The criticism of the current models’ limited storage space served as high-octane fuel when the time came to sketch the new interior of the S40 and V50. We weren’t entirely satisfied until we felt we had exploited every single available cubic centimeter in an efficient way,” explained Harper.

Under the hood, the Volvo cars feature sharper driveline range. The T5 engine produces an output of 171kW. Internationally there are also five other petrol engine versions available - ranging from a 74kW 1.6-litre to 126kW 2.4i including the bio-ethanol Flexifuel variant.

The new S40 and V50 are given a long list of safety features to go with the new design philosophy. Features include the optional Active Bi-Xenon headlamp, hazard warning lights, brake lights with the EBL (Emergency Brake Lights) function, and cutting-edge safety airbags.

“The Volvo S40 and V50 not only account for one-third of our total sales volume in 2007; they also play a vital role in reinforcing the Volvo brand. The new models sharpen their competitiveness in every important area and I am convinced that together with the new C30, they will attract even more new and younger buyers,” noted Arp.

Ford Still Deciding on the Fate of Volvo

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
volvo
Shane Morgay asked:

The last time that Bill Ford has made an optimistic announcement was in 2005 wherein he cited Ford and Volvo engineers working together to produce new exciting safety features that will enhanced night vision and improved collision avoidance ability of vehicles.

Unfortunately after such announcement Ford’s finances have started to dwindle and has overshadowed the earlier full of hope message of Mr. Ford. Instead of the closer cooperation between Ford and Volvo that Mr. Ford has announced, the automaker with its new CEO Alan Mulally is mulling over the sale of its Sweden-based subsidiary. Bill Ford remains to be the Chairman of Ford Motors and unlike in the past wherein he always gives out public updates on the happenings within the company now he chose to keep quite and to give as few comments as possible on the family business.

The issue on the sale of Volvo has divided Volvo and Ford. But Ford has stressed that it has not engaged in any talks with any prospective buyers. Ford with all of its assets already pledged to creditors need to raise a huge amount to continue the production of new products and to realize their turnaround plan. The sale of Volvo is one of the plausible options that the automaker has since its one of their profitable brand.

The proceeds from the Volvo sale will be used to repay all of Ford’s debts and also to renegotiate borrowing terms since right now the automaker is finding it hard to find financial institutions that would loan them additional capital.

Rod Lache an analyst at Deutsche Bank has told clients last Tuesday that Ford has two very good reasons to get rid of Volvo. The first one is that the Volvo sale would simplify the recovery strategy and operating structure of Ford. Second, it would provide a source of extra cash for the restructuring of healthcare liabilities as part of the upcoming talks with the United Auto Workers’ union.

However the sale of Volvo the producer of Volvo 240 parts would signal the final dismemberment of Ford’s premier car business outside of North America which was formed in the year 1980s and 1990s.

Ford has disposed of Aston Martin earlier this year and last Thursday was the deadline set by the automaker’s financial advisers for interested buyers to give their bid for Land Rover and Jaguar. But for Volvo, Ford has not yet made any official announcement of it’s supposedly sale. This must be because of the fact that the Swedish automaker has been the most profitable part of the PAG plus it has made a significant contribution to the development of other Ford products.

Start November in Style at the Last Volvo Masters

Saturday, December 6th, 2008
volvo
alsur asked:

Spain’s most important golf tournament is this year celebrating not only it’s 21st edition, but also the last one in its present format from 30th of October to 2nd of November.

It’s the end-of-season showpiece of golf’s European Tour, the finest golfers on the circuit going head-to-head for the very last time over the mainland’s finest course, Valderrama.  The €4,25 million flagship championship is one of the most spectator-friendly events in world-class sport, a ‘must see – must be seen at,’ event that extends way beyond just golf, a society occasion and an excuse to play some of Southern Spain’s finest golf courses – including Valderrama before winter takes its grip.

For those also requiring accommodation there are specially priced packages starting from three-nights in a 4 star hotel with breakfast, a Volvo Masters weekend pass and rental car at airport costing as little as €269 (approx. GBP 214). With these rates there can be fewer better opportunities to play in the morning and watch the stars in the afternoon.

Then there’s the opportunity – for those brave enough - to follow in the footsteps of the Masters, to play Valderrama under championship conditions, back tees and Sunday pin positions within hours of the winning putt having been holed.

For those golfing enthusiasts who can loosen the purse strings a little, the “After the Masters” package is the crème de la crème. Entrance tickets for the duration of the tournament are complemented by a round of golf at Valderrama on November 4th, where the course layout will be in the same style as for the competition itself. The same pin positions, glass greens and impossible rough. Ideal for those who like to suffer! To round off a perfect “holiday”, additional rounds will be played at Sotogrande, La Reserva and Alcaidesa.

For details on Volvo Masters short break golf packages and tickets visit or call Golf in Spain on +34 95. 247 4848. Official event website at www.volvomasters.com

Volvo Entertains Dna Evolution

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

Steve Mattin, Volvo’s new vice president and director for design, has a problem with old Volvos: there are so many of them. “There are millions of boxy ones out there,” said Mattin in an interview. “We want to move beyond the box.”

To step out of the boxy image, the automaker is entertaining a new design DNA. And Mattin intends to recast the visual cues of Volvo cars. “We want to evolve our design DNA,” he said. The Design DNA is a tag for the basic visual elements of cars. The DNA covers the look of a grille, the angle of a roof, and the contour of the taillights. The DNA makes a BMW a BMW. Ford DNA completes a Ford.

The design director aims to reach out to the young generation buyers and to a wider market for Volvo. “We want to pump up the visual volume,” Mattin said. At Volvo, Mattin is not expecting a dramatic change. After all, it was Peter Horbury, the director for North American design at Ford, who penned the automaker’s existing design cues in his earlier job as design director for Volvo. Rather, Mattin sees an evolution.

Mattin’s perspective of post-boxy Volvos is of more complex and sculptural shapes. The designer envisions more expressive and more extroverted cars. The idea is laid out in the XC60 crossover concept which was introduced at the North American International Auto Show.

Horbury, on the other hand, started his evolution of the Volvos by giving them a prominent catwalk. The catwalk is a replica of Volvos in the 1950s. It is also a way of softening the high, solid sides of the new Volvos. Horbury gave the sides a high shoulder, rounding off the box in a way that still appeared solid, though less functional.

Now Mattin has came up with angled catwalk and reshaped box as two wedges with sculptured sides. Designer Steve Potter is credited for the exterior. Justin Scully has contributed to make the interior of Volvos fascinating. “I want the cars to be recognizable as Volvos from twice as far away,” Mattin noted.

To pump up the visual volume even at night, Mattin integrated small lights near the grille to make the shape visible even in the dark. He also emphasized the lighting of the arched rear end.

Mattin previously worked as a designer for the small A-Class and R-Class wagon at Mercedes-Benz in Germany. He wants Volvos to have large windows to bring in light and bodies recognizable at once as Volvos during the long nights.

The Volvo XC60’s vertical rear window is a new cue for the Swedish automaker. It is an expanded version of that found on the new C30. Underneath the wide glass, the automaker’s name is spelled out in large, widely spaced letters, for a virtual banner of brand identification. It is entertained by the automaker to transform the design language back into written language. The same big letters were also shown on the new V70 wagon, which was launched at the Geneva International Motor Show this year.

Inside the car, Volvo pool of designers retains the floating console that has already become a Volvo trademark. The designers are contemplating on the introduction of the new features to serve as refined trademarks of the automaker. Simply, the evolution does not only cover the Volvo pressure plates and other safety features of the cars - it pricks into the design core itself.
