volvo 1800 clutch will not disengage when vehicle is running?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

baghdaddi asked:

Advice on how to troubleshoot and/or repair.
Vehicle was parked for over three months while I was out of the country, when I returned in July, the clutch would not disengage when depressed, so I could not put it into gear.
1967 Volvo 1800s
Thanks for the responses. I do not think it is the hydraulic system, as the clutch worked just fine three months ago, and it hasn’t been moved from the garage. The fluid level in the master is right where it always is. I am going to try the rocking method, to see if it could be a frozen clutch plate.

Volvo Redesign Takes S40 Closer to S80

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

As the 2008 model year approaches, car manufacturers are hard at work to develop new vehicles or redesign existing ones. This dynamic nature of the auto industry has given consumers a wide choice of vehicles. Constantly improving vehicles benefit consumers significantly, as car manufacturers continue to outdo each other and themselves, the quality of cars made available to consumers also increases.

One such car brand giving effort in the improving of an existing model is the Swedish auto company Volvo. For the 2008 model year, the Ford-owned car maker will be offering a redesigned Volvo S40 and its wagon version, the V50.

The company known for popularizing “Scandinavian luxury” is at it again. This time, the entry-level compact sedan S40 and wagon V50 underwent redesign which moves the units closer to the midsize luxury car in Volvo’s lineup - the S80. In fact, the redesigned S40 takes a lot of style concepts from the S80. Some style cues that the S40 now shares with the S80 is the nose of the compact sedan which now looks almost exactly as the S80’s. The S40’s grille is also adorned with a bigger Volvo badge. Some auto design experts see this as the dawning of a bolder move to be taken by Volvo in terms of designing future models.

The very distinct Volvo headlight is present in the latest edition of the S40 as well as the fog lamps which, no doubt, have been perfected by the car manufacturer based on a country known for its harsh climate especially during winter season where fog lamps are a must have for vehicles. Another change made to the exterior of the S40 is the one part air intake unit. This replaces the former three-part unit used by the S40’s predecessor.

As the S40 moves closer to the Volvo S80, its wagon version also moves closer to the wagon version of the S80. Just like the S40, the V50’s grille is also redesigned by Volvo to give the wagon a bolder look. Its Volvo headlight is also becoming more and more similar to the wagon version of the S80 - the V70. The three-part air intake unit used by the current V50 is also replaced by a single full-width unit. Mirroring the bolder style cues used on the S40, the Volvo V50 also shows off a bigger Volvo badge on its redesigned nose. This shows how consistent Volvo is in designing a sedan and its wagon version. While Volvo has departed from designing and producing boxy cars, the S40 and the V50 are built with safety in mind. This makes the redesigned S40 and V50 even safer than its boxy predecessors.

As Volvo’s design cues become bolder, the company has succeeded in combining good looks and safety in just one vehicle.

Aside from redesigning the front end of the V50, design engineers from Volvo also made sure that the rear of the V50 and the S40 will complement the redesigned front end of the car. The tail lights on the redesigned V50 are made slimmer. The V50 as well as the S40 uses LED brake lights. The rear bumper was restyled for the next model year which complements the bold style cues used on the front end of the sedan and the wagon. The twin exhaust pipes also add to the aesthetic value of the Volvo S40 and the V50.

As far as the interior is concerned, the Scandinavian luxury theme is evident, thanks to new interior trims used in the redesign. Not only is the interior made to look god but it is also quite functional. Designers of the new S40 and the V50 gave both vehicles an increased interior space. This is especially evident on the V50. Since the wagon is known for its versatility, Volvo see it fit that more space be given for cargoes inside the V50.

Not only did Volvo improve the exterior and interior of the S40 and the V50 but also the company also did work on improving the vehicles’ powertrain. Manual and automatic gear boxes will be offered with both the diesel and gasoline versions of the S40 and the V50.

Is a 1995 Volvo 940 a good vehicle, or should I keep looking?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Surfdude asked:

Recently I crashed my truck and I need a new car for cheap. A teacher at my school is offering my a 1995 Volvo 940 for 750 dollars. The only issue with the car is that is needs new brakes. The reason that the price is reduced so radically is because they believe that it would not sell for higher as their son, (the previous owner) ripped off the upholstry and padding in the cieling. This is a relatively easy fix. Is it worth it to buy this vehicle?

Volvo Plans to Expand Equipment Business in India

Saturday, March 14th, 2009
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

The Swedish company known for its safe cars and reliable trucks has recently announced that they will be expanding their presence in India. This announcement is not connected to the automobile market but the commercial equipment market. The company is planning to produce construction equipments, and road development machines in India.

The announcement came after the second largest truck and bus manufacturer in the world acquired Ingersoll Rand’s road construction equipment division recently. Volvo acquired the division for $1.3 billion from the diversified industrial firm. The division has an assembly facility in Bangalore, India and this is where Volvo is planning to manufacture their products.

Eric Leblanc, the managing director of Volvo India Private Limited, announced that the manufacturing facility will be producing Volvo-branded equipments in the near future. Equipments initially pointed out by Volvo to be manufactured at the said facility are excavators and loaders. These equipments will be sold in the Indian market.

Leblanc also pointed out that they are in the process of fusing the operation of the IR division and their own. When the process is completed, it is expected that the manufacturing plant will be producing Volvo-branded equipments.

“We have completed the acquisition transaction globally a month ago and are currently integrating the sales and distribution of road machinery business of IR with Volvo,” said Leblanc. “We do intend to use their plant to produce other global construction equipment products in India.”

Leblanc claimed that the presence of an engineering base in India will cut down the price of equipments they are planning to market in the country. The engineering base will also help Volvo increase its presence in India while at the same time giving them a head start in coping with the local employees. The brand Volvo will be used on equipments that will be produced by the Ingersoll Rand manufacturing facility.

“Over the next 12 months we will launch new range of products. We already have road development machines in our portfolio like motor graders which will be further expanded,” said Leblanc. This shows Volvo’s dedication to expanding their presence in the Asian country.

Aside from the planned excavators and loaders, Volvo is also thinking about the development and production of heavy road construction equipments and other road making machineries. The expansion of their offering in the Indian market will increase their share of the market. Currently, Volvo has a 13 percent share in the excavator range market. The company has sold 800 machines like excavators, wheel loaders, and graders which amounted to about $100 million. With the increase in production capacity, Volvo looks to produce and sell more equipment such as that in the country resulting to higher profits.

“Right now we don’t have any production capacity for excavators in India. We import excavators from Volvo’s Korean plant and sell in India. We are looking to manufacture excavators in India but as of now no decision has been taken in this regard. There is a potential to make them in India,” said Leblanc. It is also expected that Volvo will offer discount Volvo parts for their trucks in India.

The company is expecting that the demand for vehicles that they will produce will increase as the Indian government focus on infrastructure projects. For now, the Swedish company estimates that the road construction equipment market all over the world is worth $4 billion per year.

Volvo’s 2008 Lineup Announced

Friday, March 13th, 2009
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

For every year model, it is expected of car manufacturers to improve their lineup. These improvements can either be slight changes or totally redesigning a particular auto model. Volvo, the Swedish brand currently owned by the Ford Motor Company under its Premiere Automotive Group (PAG), has announced its lineup for the 2008 model year. The production of their 2008 model year vehicles started May 14. These vehicles will be available to consumers by the month of July.

For their 2008 model year vehicles, Volvo made the auxiliary input for MP3 players as a standard feature. The company is the first to offer that for their range of cars mass produced for the global market. Some of the vehicles on Volvo’s lineup for the 2008 model year have been redesigned totally while keeping the prices lower to make them available to more car buyers. The company known for safe cars is also fast becoming known for their concern for the environment with a lineup which includes flex-fuel vehicles.

For the 2008 model year, Volvo will introduce the new generation of the S40 sedan and its wagon counterpart, the V50. Both the sedan and the wagon have undergone a redesign which brought them closer to the bigger S80 and V70. Both the interior and exterior of the Volvo V50 and the S40 have been improved to make them more appealing to car buyers. Safety features are, of course, a given for these auto models.

Another redesigned model will also be introduced by Volvo for the 2008 model year comes in the form of the S60. The sedan is equipped with a long list of safety features and a host of consumer comfort and convenience features such as the six speakers that come with the Performance audio system and an in-dash CD player. Aesthetically, the vehicle looks good with its 16-inch alloy wheels and leather steering wheel.

For the Volvo S80 sedan, the changes made are minor compared to the S40 and the V50. Some of the new features that the S80 have are the availability of a new exterior color scheme and two new alloy wheel options. On the inside, a new wood trim will be available to heighten the “Scandinavian luxury” theme that Volvo has made popular. In terms of its powerplant, the diesel engine option for the S80 will be available with an all-wheel drive configuration for the 2008 model year.

The diesel engines have been improved by Volvo giving the engines a quieter operation. This was made possible by the use of new injectors, a revised oil sump, and changes to the engine mounts. For the gasoline engines, the lineup used in the 2007 model year will be available for the 2008 model year. The engines are equipped with Volvo oxygen sensors for better fuel economy.

The S80’s wagon version, the Volvo V70, will be offered in three trim levels. These are the S, SE, and the Special Edition trim package. Engine options include the 2.4-liter gasoline, the 2.4-lite and the 2.5-liter diesel engines. The 2.5-liter diesel is turbocharged to provide more power. Both manual and Geartronic transmissions are available to be paired with these engines.

The best-selling Volvo, the XC90, was revised and it will be available for the 2008 model year with major exterior and interior upgrades. For the exterior of the mid-size luxury crossover sport luxury vehicle, three new colors are added to the existing options. An XC90 is incidentally up for grabs as Volvo once again partnered in the promotion of the newest Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film.

The newest addition to Volvo’s lineup is the compact C30. The model shows that the Swedish company is departing from it reputation as a producer of boxy cars. For the 2008 model year, the C30 will be available with flex-fuel engine which means it can run on pure gasoline or a combination of gasoline and bio-ethanol. The addition of the flex-fuel engine is not the only revision to the engine lineup for the C30. The turbocharged engine was upgraded to provide more power.

For its exterior, the C30 will be available with three new colors. Safety features are added to the already long list of safety features for the C30. The 2008 Volvo C30 will be equipped with a system that will flash the hazard lights if any airbag is activated. The Emergency Brake Light is also added to the features of the C30. This features flashes all the car’s brake lights at a very fast rate when the driver performs an emergency braking action. These additions made the C30 even safer than its predecessor.

The Volvo C70 convertible underwent some interior upgrades for the 2007 model year. The floating stack that Volvo popularized was revised to make it more convenient to use. A more compact handbrake design is also part of the upgrades to the coupe/convertible. The T5 engine for the C70 also underwent revisions to increase its power output.
