Volvo City Bus B7RLE was awarded by Car India & Bike India Magazine together with NDTV - a prominent TV business news channel - with the Commercial Vehicle Technology of the year 2006 award. The award was given to Volvo during a gala ceremony held in Mumbai. The jury commented while giving the award, “Volvo city bus deserves a special recognition for changing the overall outlook of the commuters towards city travel. Volvo has paved the way for a modern city bus system in India.”

Volvo, world renowned for its buses has been present in India for the last six years and currently provides the same experience that change passengers derived from luxury AC bus inter-city segment in the country. It was just last year when the Volvo City bus concept through the B7RLE model was introduced in the cities of Bangalore and recently offered in Pune. Although the B7RLE is still new but it is already getting positive response from passengers and the city transport authorities.

Since its introduction in Bangalore City last January 2006 many passengers have chosen to ride the Volvo City Buses instead of using their personal vehicles. This event in turn reduces city traffic and lowers down harmful C02 emissions.

Volvo City Bus a Comfortable Option

Volvo City Buses is equipped with the most up-to-date technology and concept that promote efficient public transport in a city. Volvo’s City Buses comes with high quality parts like Volvo alternator, a fully automatic gearbox, air-conditioning, optimally powered engine and a design that provides optimum capacity and comfort for passengers to move inside the bus. The Volvo City Bus is also loaded with safety features making it the ultimate transport for the commuting public.

The Volvo City Bus is just the first step in Volvo’s long list of plans for its customers. Volvo hopes to see the bus transport in the city to play a key role in reducing traffic congestion and increased mobility especially in a heavily populated country such as India. Volvo in India today supports over 1,200 buses for both the inter-city and city through a network of 19 service and parts centers plus a countrywide sales network.

How to Disassemble the Center Console on a Volvo S40/V40?

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Zee asked:

I have a 2001 Volvo S40. The cigarette lighter (12V Power Outlet) broke on my center console. It just dropped into the whole where it was sitting on. I might have pushed it too hard.

I managed to pull it back, but something broke off and if I push it a little harder it will go back again. I would like to fix it somehow permanently, but I couldn’t take apart the center console.

A step by step instruction would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Jared

Volvo 760 Turns 25

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Glady Reign asked:

Born in February 1982, the Volvo 760 GLE could be the proof of the automaker’s domineering presence in the auto industry. Twenty-five years ago, the Volvo 760 GLE was introduced to the enthusiasts and critics alike. It has received a rapturous welcome from both the press and the public. As a fact, it was regarded as having exciting chiseled features and elegant design hence critics said it is not a typical Volvo yet unmistakably Volvo.

The Volvo 760 was the car that saved the automaker back then. It created the foundation that created the modern Volvo Car Corp. However, the road ahead its introduction was both long and tricky and for it to survive up to the present time only means high-level of endurance and capabilities.

The year 1975 was said to be quite a tough year for the auto industry. It was the time when the world first experienced oil crisis. The pressure in the industry was amplified when the new Volvo 240 started to experience quality-related problems. Eventually, the situation made it tougher for Volvo to build cars in Torslanda. Also, it was not sufficiently rewarding to export cars.

In the 1980s, the difficulty of catching the desires of customers was apparent. To remedy this mounting dilemma, Volvo created a group to brainstorm, formulate and plan the future of the company. The managerial task was vested to Håkan Frisinger’s hands and the position of Product Manager New Model and coordinator of the project was given to Hans Gustavsson, a young engineer who later became the company’s engineering and product development manager.

The burden was never that easy. “We started to plan the 760 at a time when the prerequisites changed virtually every day. And there wasn’t a whole lot of agreement either on what the car should be like,” Gustavsson recalled. “For the first time ever at Volvo, we used a meticulously carried out global analysis. In-depth studies and flexibility in our approach would guide our work onto the right track. But we really did feel the pressure, knowing as we did that there was absolutely no room for any error.”

“For the first time in Volvo’s history we used product clinics to test people’s reactions ahead of the imminent product release. The findings were not entirely positive, but in the US, which would be the car’s main market, the response was immensely positive and people felt that this was a model that was entirely to their taste, so we followed that line,” said Gustavsson further.

Gustavsson sums up the remarkable car by saying, “The Volvo 760 was a pivotal point for Volvo Cars in terms of product and economy, and both it and its derivatives came to form the basis for the company’s survival. Without the 760 there would have been no 850, without that no S80, and so on. The 760 project cost 3.5 billion kronor at that time. Of course, the aim was that the 760 and its forthcoming derivatives should last throughout the 1980s.”

All told, 221,309 cars were made in the 760 Series before it was replaced in 1990 by the Volvo 960. By that time, it had earned Volvo a hale and hearty profit and had given the automaker prestige for almost an entire decade.

The Volvo 760, introduced in the United States in 1982, was discontinued after the 1990 model year and was replaced by the 960. The car was used as a police car in some countries. The said car boasts quality and tested auto parts and accessories that include Volvo alternator, revised dashboard, electronic climate control (ECC), three-position tilt steering, multi-link independent rear suspension, and a stereo system.

Volvo Expands Business in China

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Glady Reign asked:

The Chinese car market has seen a remarkable increase in sales in recent memory. The second largest car market in the world is continually attracting the attention of car manufacturers. It is expected that 8.5 million vehicles will be sold in China this year. Volvo Cars is one of the car manufacturers seizing the opportunity by expending their presence in China.

The Swedish car manufacturer announced that they have sold 60.5 percent more vehicles in China for the first quarter of the year as compared to the first three months of 2006. The company further announced that they are expecting a 100 percent sales increase this year.

To facilitate this increase in Volvo sales in the country, the existing 50 Volvo dealerships in the country has already been upgraded to accommodate more vehicles in their showrooms. In the past 12 months, Volvo announced that 20 new or upgraded dealerships have opened their doors for Chinese car buyers.

This business expansion in China has apparently pleased the country’s president as Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Volvo’s assembly facilities in Gothenburg. The visit is in connection with the president’s first state visit in Sweden.

Last year, Volvo Cars sold more than 7,000 vehicles in China. “We almost doubled our sales volume in 2006, and our aim is to do the same again in 2007,” says Fredrik Arp, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Ford Motor Company-owned car manufacturer. “To us, China is the most exciting car market in the world. It is a vital part of our growth plans, and we believe that in the next 5 to 10 years China will move up to second place in Volvo Cars’ sales chart,” he added.

In connection with the Chinese President’s visit, Arp has this to say: “It’s a great honor to host President Hu Jintao during his visit to Sweden and Volvo. This will give us an excellent opportunity to inform him about our cars and our plans on how to strengthen our presence in the Chinese market.”

In terms of production in China, Volvo Cars has already started the production of the best-selling S40 in the country. In the middle of July last year, the first S40 rolled out of the Changan Ford Mazda assembly facility in Chongqing. By the end of last year, about 4,000 Volvo S40s have already been built in China. This year, the company aims to produce 8,000 units of Volvo tie rod-equipped S40s which are going to be built and sold in China.

“The launch of the S40 produced in China has been successful, both from an industrial point of view as well as from a commercial angle. After working with Changan Ford Mazda for almost two years, we have ensured that their factory, through cooperation with our own experts, meets our high demands regarding Volvo quality. A Volvo must be a Volvo car in all aspects, no matter where it is produced,” says the Volvo Cars CEO.

Aside from the S40, Volvo also offers the flagship S80 and the award-winning XC90 in the Chinese auto market. These two auto models have promoted the brand well in the country. Last year, the two auto models comprised almost half of the total vehicle sale of the company in China. The redesigned S80 is expected to generate more interest in the brand among Chinese car buyers. The polished XC90 meanwhile was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year.
