Every year, Volvo Cars gives out awards to those special individuals or organizations who do work hard to make the world a better place. In a sense, Volvo is out giving recognition and awards to people who can be called our everyday heroes.

And for this year, Volvo has already chosen the recipient for the “America’s Greatest Hometown Hero”. And the lucky one is Dr. Ingida Asfaw. Asfaw is the fourth recipient of this award which is part of the annual Volvo For Life Awards. And indeed, when Volvo does give out this award, it makes sure that the person is duly awarded for his entire lifetime.

Now if you are thinking that these recognized local heroes would be getting a Volvo vehicle, some cash, and some extra Volvo auto parts to match, then you better think again. This is one coveted award and Volvo is sure giving out good prizes. And Asfaw did receive some cool prizes that would last him a lifetime of doing good—$50,000 plus one new Volvo vehicle every three years. This really is a good way to keep people on their toes and to keep them doing the good stuff that would help not only themselves but other people as well.

Dr. Asfaw has been born in the country of Ethiopia and now, he works as a heart surgeon. He did leave his country to find education in the United States but he did vow that he would soon be returning back to his country to be able to help out take care of the sick and the ill. He did return to Ethiopia through the international coalition that he created - the Ethiopian North American Health Professionals Association (ENAHPA). And it was a 2007 Volvo Xc90 V8 that Dr. Asfaw chose as his very Volvo vehicle.

Anne Belec is the president of the North American arm of Volvo Cars and she does state, “Every year, I am touched by the amazing stories and thousands of nominations we receive through the Volvo For Life Awards. Dr. Asfaw stands tall as a man who has devoted his energy and skills to addressing a devastating crisis in his homeland. It’s an honor for Volvo to help him advance his cause.”

S80 is an executive car, which is now the flagship car of the automaker. It was introduced in 1998 to replace S90. The brand new version is made sleeker and sexier by using curvaceous Volvo S80 parts. A tap on its safety features, driving capabilities and ergonomics was given to enhance its benefits to the occupants.

The new Volvo S80, which was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, features a new 3.2 L straight-6 or 4.4 L V8 engine in combination with available all wheel drive. The new car is based on the EUCD platform. It uses some of Volvo S40 parts as well as that of Ford Focus to boost its total appeal to aficionados.

Volvo S80’s interior is consistent with its predecessor. From the vinyl panel to brushed-aluminum inserts; it is basically almost the same. However, minor makeovers were made to door panels, optional steering wheel and navigation system. Further, S80’s V8 engine and 6-cylinder are all first class auto parts. Volvo S80 mechanical engine parts are powered by the combination of Ford, Yamaha and Volvo’s quality engines.

The exterior of S80 was subtly tweaked. It now comes with a new grille, taillights and reshaped side mirrors. Other minor modifications were also resorted to achieve the desired new façade and feel of the flagship.

One of the must-have features of the car is Volvo’s Personal Car Communicator (PCC) remote control, which can be used to check on the security level of the car and to ascertain whether the alarm was set or the car was locked. In addition, S80 also boasts its heartbeat sensor, which is said to work with the SOS feature of the car.

One enthusiast said that if the car owner’s passion is more on safety, comfy and appealing automotive design, he will likely be pleased with the new S80 and so are other travelers.

The Ford Motor Company has recently posted its sales figures for the first month of 2007 and it shows a sharp decline in the company’s total sales from the different brands it owns.

One of the Ford Motor Company owned brands is the Sweden-based outfit known for their cars’ safety - Volvo. The brand also posted its sales figures in North America for January. And just like its parent company, the brand also posted a decrease in their number of units sold for that same period. Their sales in North America which includes the markets of US, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico is down by 11 percent compared to the same period last year. All in all, Volvo has sold 8,268 units in all these territories.

In the US market, they only managed to sell 7,819 units last month which is lower than their output last year by 12 percent. That figure also includes the sales made by the company in Puerto Rico. Lower sales figures were also posted in Canada where the company sold 571 vehicles - marking a 4.5 percent decrease compared to that of January 2006. While in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, their sales have dropped, their market in Mexico is growing which is evident in the 15.5 percent increase in their sales at the said territory having sold 238 units there. While the sales in the US market is declining as also in Canada, their performance in Mexico shows that the company is doing something right in terms of developing and producing cars.

In the US, the most popular car in the safety-oriented car maker’s lineup is the Volvo XC90 which shows that the SUV market is still alive and well in the US market. The Volvo XC90 posted a sales number of 2,382 making it barely missing their mark set last year at 2,390 units. The next best-seller in the lineup of Volvo is their sedan, the Volvo S40, which racked up 1,377 units sold but is down by 30.3 percent compared to last year’s 1,976 S40 sold. The Volvo V70, which is the company’s entry in the estate car segment, managed to raise a sales figure of 257 units sold down by 42.8 percent compared to last year’s figures.

But with the forthcoming release of an all new version of the Volvo V70, the company is determined to halt the downward slide of their sales figures. The much heralded Volvo V70 is what the company hopes to use as a Volvo clutch that would connect all the potential of the company to the consumers just like how the clutch connects the engine and the transmission. The estate car will be released to the market this year by Volvo in its bid to turn around its decreasing sales figures. The Volvo V70 will help the award-winning C30 to propel the company to a profitable future by latching on to the younger buyer base that they hope will be loyal to the company’s cars.

The continuing drop off in the number of vehicles being sod by the brand is a continuing ordeal for its parent company which is slowly being overtaken by Toyota, sliding it to third largest car manufacturer in the US. But with the expected turn around due to the interest that the public is showing in the newer models of the brand under its name like Volvo, it seems that the company will finally be back in its winning form.

The figures showing the decrease in the company’s sales figures are released by Volvo Cars of America, LLC which is a subsidiary of Volvo Car Corporation that is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The North American arm of the company is based in Irvine, California.

On the other hand the petrol engines include a 100 horsepower 1.6 liter I4, a 170 horsepower 2.4 liter inline-5, and a 220 horsepower turbocharged 2.5 liter inline-5.

Volvo has a track record for its safety features and the C30 hatchback has exemplified the legendary reputation of the automaker in the said aspect. The hatchback is equipped with BLIS short for Blind Spot Information System which helps drivers in identifying another vehicle in the blind spot. The C30 being a true Volvo breed is not going to be allowed to stray without IDIS or Intelligent Driver Information System, WHIPS or Whiplash protection System, and a Side Impact protection System that comes with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain, IC.

The hatchback is also given the patented front and rear structure that would absorb and redistribute impact on the vehicle in case of accident. Added protections for passengers are also installed like seatbelts with unique pretensioners.

Arp further stated that Volvo is planning to sell as much as 65,000 cars every year and 75% of those sales are expected to come from Europe market.
