Diane asked:

I am tuning up my volvo and there is an opening under the cover between the 3rd and 4th spark plugs. There are 2 threaded holes beside this hole. It appears that oil may be coming out of the hole as there is a small amount of oil in the area.

Newest Volvo Car Designers From Taiwan

Monday, September 21st, 2009
volvo
Kenneth Mckinley asked:

Volvo cars are making a big splash in China’s car market. The Volvo Car Corporation of Sweden sent out some major designers like Steve Harper to Taiwan to enlist some of the country’s local car-designers. The Ford Group decided to recruit some Taiwanese car designers for the Great China Car Market.

The recruited car designers from Taiwan will be allowed to design new car models for its Sweden designer center. Volvo has made this plan specifically for the Great China Car Market. New car designs will be made by these Taiwanese designers for the distinctive and oriental taste of the targeted consumers.

500,000 to 700,000 Volvo cars are expected to be sold out internationally this year. This includes around 50,000 units for the Asian market which includes Taiwan, Japan, mainland China and other Southeast Asian nations. Since the demand for luxury cars are rapidly rising, car makers from the Volvo Car Corporation are aiming to sell 50,000 to 80,000 units of Volvo cars in Asia in 2007.

Apart from that, Volvo is continuously deploying its manufacturing, product design and parts procurements including its Volvo auto parts in Asia. Also, as a component of Ford’s global part procurement system, they have the responsibility of lowering the production cost.

According to Volvo Car Taiwan officials, Volvo is number three among the country’s imported car brands. Still, Mercedes-Benz and BMW tops the chart. However, they are adding more efforts to meet the consumer’s taste in Great China. This is one of the reasons why Volvo is employing talented car designers from Taiwan to develop new car models for the specific market.

Steve Harper has been visiting Taiwan several times. According to the officials, Harper was extremely impressed with the designing performances of Taiwan’s local designers. These designers are from Ford Lio Ho of Motor Co.’s design center. Volvo have appropriated NT$10 million or US$305,810, to continuously hold a series of car designing seminars with the Taiwan Design Center. This is a proof that Asian talents are becoming more globally competitive in terms of car designing.

Soon, these designs will be made available in the market. Finally, Volvo car designs will be more preferable for Asians.

Volvo Trucks Releases Volvo Fe in Australia

Sunday, September 13th, 2009
volvo
Glady Reign asked:

Auto manufacturers are known for their dedication to increase their reach in the global auto market. Not only car manufacturers but also companies producing trucks are looking to improve their popularity in different parts of the world. Volvo Trucks, the Swedish company which is currently the second largest manufacturer of buses and trucks in the world recently increased their offering in the Australian market as they introduced the Volvo FE range.

The FE lineup is composed of distribution vehicles. The demand for these types of vehicles in the country has spurred Volvo to introduce the said model lineup in the country.

The said offering is an addition to the upper end of the medium duty truck market in Australia. With the Volvo brand behind it, the FE is being regarded already as a strong contender in its segment. The trucks in the range of the FE model is aimed for different applications such as distribution refuse collection, municipal transportation and light construction duties.

The trucks are equipped with huge 7.0-liter engines which are available in two power ranges. The first engine choice is rated to produce up to 280 horsepower while the other engine can produce as much as 320 horsepower. The FE replaces the Volvo FL in the truck maker’s lineup in the country. The FE is competing in the 18 to 26 ton segment of the market.

James Morris, Volvo Trucks’ national sales manager for the country, has this to say about the introduction of the FE range: “This is an important part of Volvo Trucks’ long-term strategy to broaden and reinforce our position within a number of segments where we have noticed considerable potential. With our business concept we can offer both new and existing customers cost effective and comprehensive transport solutions encompassing modern trucks and new, individually adapted services to suit our customers’ needs. Behind the new Volvo business concept is a thorough analysis of the needs of emerging markets in Australia. For many companies operating in the urban environment, haulage is not necessarily their core business.” He added that: “These companies are not as interested in maintaining a vehicle fleet and that is why the main thrust is to offer good total economy and trouble free solutions with dependable trucks and well-planned maintenance. Volvo wants to help drivers work more efficiently with as few stoppages as possible.”

The company known for in-depth research before developing a new product has done the same in the development of the FE. The efficiency of these large vehicles is increased as compared to its predecessor. Case in point is the oil change interval which is made longer by Volvo. The trucks will only need to have their oil changed after 100,000 kilometers traveled. Other parts such as Volvo radiators, steering components, and drivetrain parts are also reliable.

Morris further extolled the virtues of the FE range saying that: “The Volvo FE can be optimized to suit very specific needs and is currently available in three cab variants including the day cab, comfort cab and sleeper cab. Total economy and operating reliability were not the only drivers behind the development of the new Volvo FE with safety and environmental issues naturally also given priority. Further improvements were made to maximize the field of vision for the driver - special close quarter mirrors on both sides combining with extensive forward vision to offer the driver an industry leading overview of their surrounds.”

Volvo CEO Rejects Discussion of Possible Sale of Brand

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
volvo
Rain Stockton asked:

The head of Ford Motor Co.’s Volvo car unit refused to discuss if the brand could end up being sold as its parent company looks to refocus on its troubled North American business.

In an interview on the sidelines of an auto conference, the refusal by Volvo Car Corp. CEO Fredrik Arp follows news reports in Europe earlier this year that Ford briefly investigated the idea of selling the Swedish brand.

Ford announced earlier this month that it has retained financial advisors to be able to help it identify “the best way forward” for its Land Rover and Jaguar brands. These brands are part of the Ford Premier Automotive Group that lost almost $4.8 billion since 2004, despite several restructuring efforts.

Ford has attributed much of the declined sales to Jaguar but does not break out results from its individual European luxury brands. Swedish brand Volvo is also a portion of Premier Automotive Group.

Mr. Arp reasoned that he rejected the discussion and speculation because it is not in the interest of Volvo car stakeholders, customers, dealers or anybody else, and because he does not own the business. He explained at the Prague conference organized by the industry publication Automotive News Europe.

A Ford spokesman explained that the auto maker is not in discussions with any company with regard selling Volvo, which it bought in 1999 for almost $6.5 billion. Nonetheless, Mr. Arp continued that as they have consistently been saying since last year, Ford Motor Co. has been considering a number of strategic alternatives for all of their operations, just like any responsible doing of a business.

For $848 million, Ford sold Aston Martin brand in March. And until recently, the company had said that it was not interested in selling Land Rover and Jaguar. For $2.5 billion, Ford purchased the Jaguar passenger-car unit in 2000. But it has been forced to evaluate again its global business strategy as a result of big losses in North America, where high gasoline prices are dragging buyers away from Ford pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, while new entrants weaken the segments.

Last Tuesday, Mr. Arp said that Volvo’s global vehicle sales climbed 8 percent during the first five months of the year, and that he expects that the brand will set a new record for unit sales this year. With quality Volvo brakes, Volvo cars reached between 430,000 and 450,000 units of sales every year. Such sales figures are far fewer than competitors such as BMW AG and DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes unit - each of which sells more than a million vehicles every year.

As regards Volvo’s financial performance over the years as compared with the other brands in Ford’s premium group, the company officials have generally indicated greater satisfaction. Some industry analysts have speculated that Volvo would be easier to sell than Jaguar or Land Rover due to its initiatives in various safety features.
