Volvo Cars Recommends Kids to Travel Rearward Facing

Glady Reign asked:

Volvo Cars, the company famed for its safety initiatives and innovations, recommends that small children should travel in rearward facing child restraints for as long as possible - at least until they are three to four years old. Older children, on the other hand, are advised to use a booster cushion until they are 140 centimeters tall and at least ten years old.

The Swedish automaker’s recommendation is based on real life accidents blended with advanced research at Volvo Cars’ state-of-the-art crash laboratory. Volvo is absorbed in finding new ways to reduce road injuries - this is why it is focusing on safety development. For four decades now, the automaker is studying child safety as part of its philosophy.

Volvo started researching child safety in the early 1960’s. This was a time when space journeys were hot news. On the black and white TV screen you could see the astronauts lying on their backs to even out the forces during take-off and landing. Using the entire back to spread the forces was incorporated in the first child restraint prototype, which was tested in 1964. Since then, Volvo Cars has been setting the standard in child safety.

Volvo’s founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson said, “Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo therefore, is - and must remain - safety.” And the philosophy still stands up to the present time. Since its inception, the automaker has launched numerous safety milestones like Volvo park lights, three-safety belt, airbags, seatbelt with pretensioners, rearward facing child restraint, and other remarkable equipment.

“Our first rearward facing child restraint was launched back in 1972,” said Lotta Jakobsson, the Child Safety Specialist at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. Volvo has also been a driving force in international cooperations such as the making of the ISOFIX standard. The latter is a standardized anchoring system that makes it easier to fit a child restraint correctly in any car equipped with the system.

In 1970, the Volvo Traffic Accident Research Team was established to study car crashes in Sweden linked to newer Volvo models. Since then, the team has studied about 2,500 traffic accidents down to the smallest detail. Based on the accident research, the team develops new safety technologies. Information from more than 36,000 accidents is stored in a statistical database. The Side-Impact Protection System (SIPS) and the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) are direct results of this accident research.

“Our engineers identify interesting areas, develop solutions and incorporate them in the oncoming Volvo model,” said Jakobsson. “When that model is out on the streets, the research of real life car crashes continues to help decide which areas to focus on in next generation. It is a continuous process.”

Volvo’s studies and statistical database that include more than 4,500 children revealed that a child in a rearward facing child seat is approximately 90 percent less likely to be injured in an accident compared to an unrestrained child. The studies also found that using a booster cushion, the child runs an approximately 75 percent lower risk of being injured compared to being unrestrained.

“All children must always be restrained properly. They should travel facing the rear until at least the age of three-four and use restraints for older children up to 10-12 years of age,” said Jakobsson. Using a booster cushion, integrated or accessory, with the lap belt pulled tight prevents the body from riding underneath the safety belt and forward in a collision, she added.

Is this too many miles for a 1995 Volvo?

matt fedel asked:

I’m looking to buy this 1995 Volvo 850 T-5 R Sedan for $2300.

Engine: 5-Cyl. 2.3L Turbo
Trans: Automatic
Mileage: 226,000

Is this too much mileage? Do you think it will last 5 years? It had a carfax report attatched and it had perfect history. I am anxious to buy it but I am worried that it has too many miles on it. I have heard Volvo’s are very dependable cars so I don’t know. I would love input!

Volvo Radiator Hose: Coolant Supplier

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010
volvo
Kimberly Baker asked:

One hot summer day, while cruising on your Volvo, you would notice fellow drivers staring at your car. You would pull over and ask. They tell you that your Volvo is dripping fluid, apparently coming from under the hood. You drive to the dealership and mechanics there tell you that the fluid is your antifreeze. The culprit? A Volvo Radiator Hoses full of breaks, nicks and holes. Your Volvo is equipped with top of the line parts and components. One of these is the radiator hose. The Volvo radiator hose is used to connect the engine and the water pump to the engine. Made from heavy-duty and flexible rubber compounds, your Volvo radiator hose should last a lifetime, as it is highly resistant to oil and heat. It goes from the radiator into either the top or bottom of your Volvo engine. The Volvo radiator hose controls the flow of coolant to the radiator. But time, heat and contaminants will eventually cause your radiator hose to fail. There are three types of hoses: the common hose, the molded or shaped hose and the accordion type hose. The common hose is straight and does not take much bending stress before it collapses. It is made form rubber with fabric reinforcement. Molded or shaped hoses are like common hoses, except that they will not collapse when bent, as they have been already molded with bends. The accordion hose puts up with most bending and they also absorb some of the vibration coming from the engine and radiator. Your Volvo Radiator Hoses should be inspected at least twice a year, in the spring and the fall. Also, hose clamp connections should also be inspected, so you could be sure that they are still secure and free from leaks. Your Volvo radiator hose is failing or is about to fail if it is cracking or shows signs of leaking. One way to tell is to simply squeeze the radiator hose. The hose should be pliable and should not show cracks when squeezed. That is the simplest way to tell if your Volvo radiator hose is failing, but there is a more extreme form of failure. It is called electrochemical degradation (ECD). ECD generates fine cracks along the radiator hose’s walls. These fine cracks extend along the inside walls to the outsides, from one end to the other. Coolant and other fluids can seep through these cracks and cause leaks, attacking the hose reinforcement along the side. The condition can worsen to a pinhole leak or a burst hose. Coolant hoses should be checked at least every four years or more as needed. It is also a good idea to change a part of the hose that connects to the cooling system. To illustrate, when changing your radiator, it is wise to also change the radiator hoses.

If you decide to service your cooling system yourself, use extreme caution. Opening a hot radiator or coolant reservoir/overflow tank can cause severe burns. Be sure that both the engine and cooling system are cool before you begin any heating/cooling system maintenance or repairs. It is possible that your car may be equipped with an air bleed for the cooling system. Unless the cooling system is bled properly, air may stay trapped in the system and cause erratic temperatures. In extreme cases, engine or cooling system may be damaged. If you are unsure about any aspect of cooling system service, don’t take chances. Have your Volvo looked at by a professional service technician.

You can be assured of a comfortable ride in your Volvo as long as your Volvo Radiator Hoses is in fine shape. They may not be as critical like other Volvo components like the drive train or engine, but the Volvo radiator hose makes your ride comfortable and pleasurable.

Replacing the aging Volvo 960 sedan, S80 is a head turner in its own way. Volvo S80 is a front wheel luxury drive car first introduced in 1999. If you have noticed all Volvo models have a wagon version, S80, however was an exception and didn’t have one. When Volvo S80 was just being introduced, it was considered to be the flagship model of Volvo. Actually, S80 has been so popular that until now it is still considered to be the Volvo flagship model.

Volvo S80 was built using the Volvo P2 platform. The first two rim levels that came with this vehicle were the 2.9 and the T6. The 2.9 level held a 2.9 LI6 engine. T6, on the other hand, came with a twin turbocharged 2.8L I6 engine.

The present Volvo S80 is not only about power and performance, it is about using the most advanced technology available today to enhance the overall driving experience. The Volvo S80 today is equipped with Adaptive Cruiser Control System (ACC) system to ensure safetiness through its radar sensor which slows down the vehicle in times when the car you are following is slowing down. In addition to that, Volvo S80 also has Collision Warning and Brake Support (CWBS) that immediately alerts you with a flashing red light the traffic you are in suddenly changing. Therefore allowing you to slow down to avoid any kind of rear end crash.
